The Online European Feedstock Atlas

One aim of the EU-AGRO-BIOGAS project was to set up a database compiling the currently available information on gas yields of feedstock for biogas production.
In this Basic Version of the Online European Feedstock Atlas 1 888 data sets on 225 different feedstocks are available. Feedstock categories included are energy crops, livestock manures and residues. The database reflects the existing variety of available feedstock in Europe and contains data on biogas and methane yield.

In a first step a feedstock can be selected and the corresponding “standard data set” is shown. These standard data sets are based on different approaches:
  1. lab values: aggregated mean values for biogas and methane yields based on a large number of lab experiments (batch tests). Lab values are practice-based yields, i. e. they provide rather reliable prediction of the yields obtained under practice conditions.
  2. standard values: recommended biogas and methane yields, discussed and agreed by an expert panel. The basis for discussion are lab values, but due to e. g. insufficient data availability or comparability no statistically significant mean values can be provided. Additional expert judgement was therefore included in order to guarantee reliable and practice-relevant prediction of gas yields for important biogas feedstocks.
  3. Buswell: theoretical maximum biogas and methane yields calculated based on average nutrient contents of feedstock where no reliable information from lab experiments is available, using the algorithms of Buswell and Müller (1952) and Boyle (1976). The gas yields actually obtained in biogas plants can be up to 30 % lower depending on the lignocellulosis content of the respective feedstock!
In a second step individual data on feedstock quality and composition can be used to assess the biogas potential of regionally available feedstock and can thus provide basic information during the planning of biogas plants.

  • individual prognosis of gas yield:
    • individual gas yields based on the Buswell method (for most of the included feedstocks), or
    • methane yields based on the “methane energy value model” (MEVM) developed by the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, the algorithms based on results from lab experiments, i.e. practice-based and thus predicting the methane yield rather reliably.
      Such models are currently available for grass silage, maize silage, triticale silage, sorghum silage, sunflower silage (all total plant silages).
  • cost calculation:
    • specific methane costs for a single or a mixture of previously selected feedstocks; input data: individual amounts and prices, and additionally
    • fresh matter biogas yields based on the standard or on individual fresh matter contents.
